Am I Awake?

Am I awake?
What time is it?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

The coffee's cold, did I forget to drink it yet?
Did I forget?
My clothes are wet, I don't remember drinking it

When I get through this watch
Will the next one be the same?
Will I be wondering
If I'm awake?

These are not the clothes I had on when I went to bed
And something else besides my hair is growing from my head
And when I close my eyes it looks the same as when I open them again
Am I awake?
What time is it?

Is it that time again?
Wasn't it already then?
So does it have to be
The time it was again?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

Written for a TLC documentary series entitled "Resident Life."

Quoth the Johns:

Currently we're doing all this incidental music, plus the theme song, for this medical documentary show for The Learning Channel. It's an interesting, weird show because it's like, really lurid, gruesome, behind-the-scenes of the emergency room stuff, in the style of E.R., but it's a documentary. ... It's funny that they chose us [to do the music] because a lot of the music that they want is basically, what happens when the families in the waiting room are waiting to find out that the person died or something. It's like unbearably sad, and they're also into techno/electronic stuff...
